Is doTERRA bug spray for horses a healthy natural alternative?

To keep insects off your animals so they are healthy during the summer months is to avoid using toxic chemicals and instead making a homemade fly spray for horses that is chemical free.

If you own a horse, then you know that the cost of caring for them can be expensive; especially when using the more traditional solutions your vet offers. As your insurance costs rise for major problems you are still constantly buying products at the tack shop. As time goes on you start asking yourself if owning a horse is worth the money and sacrifice.

One major issue during the summer time is the fly, mosquitoes and other insects bothering and biting your horse. It is not so bad if you have a native breed, however some horses with shorter coats or white Arab breeds seem to suffer badly. I can recall my wife’s Lipizzan covered in bites regardless of what fly repellent or covering she used.

The good news is that there is an excellent homemade fly spray for horses that is cost-effective and easy to make. In addition to helping against flies and parasites, it is also great for colic, swelling and other injuries.

Essential oils are one of the best natural remedies solutions for horses

More and more horse owners are turning to essential oils after realizing how toxic other insect sprays are for their horses. Essential oils are natural and plant based and can be used for various ailments your horse may have such as peppermint oil for swelling of the ankle and fennel oil for colic.

Humans as well as horses can benefit from natural alternatives such as essential oils. For example, you can purchase a fly spray from your local shop made from synthetic chemicals and it may work reasonably well. Alternatively, you can use a home-made natural essential oils for tick repellent that will work equally well without the toxic chemicals.

There is simply no comparison as essential oils are a much better health choice for you and your horse; and will work just as effectively.

The best essential oils DIY bug bite spray brand for horses

Let me make it clear from the start that cheap supermarket essential oils are not good enough for using on your horse. The standard needs to be therapeutic grade essential oils. This means they need to be tested to ensure they are 100% pure with no filler or toxic elements. There are only a few companies that offer such a high quality product and that is doTERRA essential oils.

The reason for using doTERRA insect repellent for horses is because it is 100% pure. The test protocol is recognized globally as the standard that the rest of the industry follows. This means you are using therapeutic grade oils and not perfume or aromatherapy grade oils. The latter oils are not effective because they are not the pure plant essence and often contain solvents from the manufacturing process.

Why should you stop your horse from being bitten?

The main reason is because flies cause immense problems for animals, especially for horses and cattle. Flies not only bite and damage the skin, but they also carry parasites or diseases that can be transmitted to your animal. So keeping flies at bay is important for the health of your horses and of course yourself.

doTERRA bug spray for horses recipes

doTERRA offers two solutions for you and your horse.

First solution

The first solution is to purchase the doTERRA insect repellent blend called TerraShield. Every year I sell TerraShield to my local riding stables on mass. From all the personal doTERRA essential oils reviews at the stables TerraShield works far better than the ones they get from the tack shop. You can use it by simply rubbing the blended oil along the back of the horse or in my opinion a better solution, making a water TerraShield mix and spraying it onto your horse.

Second solution

The second solution is great if you have a large amount of horse to protect. Again this is a tried and tested recipe that has great results.

  • 2-3 cups Distilled Water
  • 5-10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 5-10 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil
  • 5-10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 5-10 drops Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) Essential Oil
  • 5-10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 5-10 drops Eucalyptus essential Oil
  • 2-5 drops of Surfactant (optional)

Mix these ingredients together, shake well and place in a spray bottle. One thing you will notice from the start is that it smells far better than the tack shop insect repellent. Spray the liquid over your horse just as they are going out into the paddock. If needed repeat as and when needed depending how bad the insect situation is that day. Also, cover your horse with a net cover and spray liberally.

Alternative essential oil

Idaho Tansy is not a common essential oil but it has excellent fly repellent properties and can be used alone or as a part of the recipe.

Other issues regarding insects

If your horses are out in the field or in the paddock they may have nowhere to run, this could be very stressful for them. If horses are overly stressed during the insect season then they may benefit from the use of Roman Chamomile essential oil. Horses are very sensitive to aromas such as essential oils; so the sweet Chamomile aroma will help calm and soothe them when they finally return to the stable.
